FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What is Movement Lawyering?

    • Movement Lawyering is a praxis (practice + theory). Movement Lawyers use their legal tools to help build the power of directly impacted communities.

  • Can I apply if I am not a lawyer?

    • YES! The application is open to lawyers, legal workers, and law students. We do ask that all applicants are interested in developing legal infrastructure for movement.

  • Are the retreats optional?

    • NO! Attendance is mandatory at both the Opening and Mid-Fellowship retreats. The Opening Retreat dates are February 3rd - 5th, the Mid-Fellowship Retreat dates are April 28th - 30th.

*Of course, we will not ask you to gather if it is not safe. We will collectively decide when and how to come together based on public health advise and personal preferences.

  • Do I have to be a c(3) to apply?

    • No, but you have to have a fiscal sponsor who is a c(3) who can receive and disperse the fellowship stipend to you. This is not a supervising relationship, the c(3) of your choice would only be responsible for receiving and dispersing your stipend. If you have any questions about having a sponsoring c(3), please feel free to email us at info@law4blacklives.org.

  • Should individuals or organizations apply?

    • Individuals can apply either in coordination with an organization they are working with as part of a joint project or work you are doing on behalf of the organization. Alternatively, you can apply as an individual and ask an organization you have a relationship with to hold and disperse the stipend.
